I’d always written poems, and as my busy family and work-life was happening, I could always eke out time to work on a poem. A poem is short, right? I carried my journal with me everywhere, jotted at red lights, wrote through lunches, and I always wrote with my students. I thought of it as private writing.
This may sound cheesy, but it’s true. After the terrorist attack on September 11th, 2001, I realized then that it was time for me to do what only I could do. I front-burnered my own writing and began my quest for a Masters of Fine Arts degree in Creative Writing, with a poetry emphasis, at Fresno State. What a journey that was. I earned the degree and kept writing.
After publishing a number of individual poems, I was asked to submit a full collection manuscript to Tourane Poetry Press in San Jose, CA, by the inimitable poet and editor Vuong Vu. The book Sightlines, published in 2013, is available on Amazon.
More journals published my individual poems and several were anthologized. I kept writing. I was invited to submit a manuscript to the Orchard Street Press Ltd, in Gates Mills, Ohio. The upshot of that adventure with editor/publisher Jack Kristofco was publication of my chapbook, Vanishing Point, in late 2018. That book can be purchased from the publisher at https://orchpress.com
Beside my husband, three friends read my work in manuscript form and give me feedback. One is a poet, one an artist, and one a musician. They are honest, read widely, are interested in good writing, ask me powerful questions, and each offers a unique take on the poems’ integrity, imagery, and soundscape. They point out issues, but never tell me how to solve them. Pure gold!
