There are two places for sure where you can hear poets reading in person from their books and new work, and there is no admission charge for either of them.

The Respite by the River is an annual author-reading and live music event that occurs monthly between April and October. This year of Covid recovery, it's running June-September. Full disclosure: I’m a member of the committee that puts this on. It’s sponsored by the San Joaquin River Parkway and Conservation Trust, and held at the River Center out on Old Friant Road. People bring picnic dinners to the lawn and hear an hour of live music, followed by an hour of an author reading. This year, the poet Ife-Chudeni Oputa kicks off the season on Thursday June 24. The poet Catherine Abbey Hodges reads August 12, and the poet Sam Pereira, on September 16. Check out:

The Fresno Poets Association, was started by the late poet Chuck Moulton, captained by the poet Chuck Hanzlicek for years, and is now a project of the MFA/Creative Writing program at Fresno State, where readings are held there in the Peters Building. on the east end of campus. They publish a season annually. In addition there are many student readings. Check it out at:

In 2018, the great Fresno poet Peter Everwine gave his last reading. It was captured on film, and you can watch this amazing event on CMAC’s website:

As Poet Laureate, it will be my pleasure to organize poetry readings--and not just my work, but that of wonderful local poets. Stay tuned!
